Eads Kelly Day October 6, 2026
People are drawn to Eads for the space: open land, long driveways and room between neighbors. The question that usually follows is a practical one. How do you actually get anywhere from here? Eads is an unincorporated community in eastern Shelby County, and its 38028 zip code reaches across the line into Fayette County and takes in parts of Fisherville and Hickory Withe. Here is how the road network works and what to think about before you choose a spot.
U.S. Highway 64 is the road most people in Eads use every day. It runs east and west through the community. Heading west, it leads toward Lakeland and Bartlett. Heading east, it continues into Fayette County toward Oakland and Somerville.
Much of the everyday driving in Eads starts on a two-lane county road and ends up on Highway 64. Names you will see on a map include Seward Road, Bragg Road, Macon Road, Chambers Chapel Road and Reed Hooker Road. These are rural roads, which means farm equipment, limited lighting and the occasional slow stretch are part of the picture.
Interstate 269, also signed as Winfield Dunn Parkway, changed how people get in and out of Eads. It is a partial outer loop around the Memphis area, and it opened in stages through this part of Shelby County beginning in 2007.
Two interchanges matter most here. Exit 15 is at Highway 64. Exit 11 is at State Route 193, which is Macon Road, near the Shelby and Fayette county line.
From either one, going north takes you to I-40 at Arlington, where you can head west toward Memphis or east toward Jackson and Nashville. Going south takes you toward Collierville and Piperton, where I-269 meets Bill Morris Parkway (State Route 385), State Route 57 and U.S. Highway 72 before continuing into Mississippi. Bill Morris Parkway then runs west through Collierville and Germantown to I-240.
State Route 205 is the other route worth knowing. In the Eads area it is called Collierville-Arlington Road. It runs south through Fisherville and across the Wolf River into Collierville, and north toward Arlington, where it becomes Airline Road.
It is a handy surface-road alternative to the interstate when you are headed to Collierville's Town Square or to Arlington. It is mostly two lanes, so it tends to be steadier than it is fast.
Two properties in Eads with the same zip code can have very different drives. Before you settle on one, it helps to do a few simple things:
Drive it at the time you would really be on the road. A weekday morning tells you more than a Sunday afternoon.
Measure to the interchange, not just to town. Being a few minutes from Exit 11 or Exit 15 can change the whole day.
Check the county. Parts of 38028 are in Shelby County and parts are in Fayette County. Taxes, services and public school districts differ between the two, so confirm which county a specific parcel is in.
Ask about water and sewer. Many properties in Eads rely on septic systems, and some use private wells. Ask for records, and consider a septic inspection and a well test as part of your due diligence.
Look into internet service. Coverage can vary from road to road in rural areas, so check providers by address if you work from home.
Because most of Eads is unincorporated, there is no town hall or municipal school district. Public schools on the Shelby County side are part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools, and zoning is by address, so confirm the assigned schools with the district. Briarcrest Christian School also has a campus in the area. Emergency services come from the county.
The community dates to 1888, when the Tennessee Midland Railroad laid tracks through a village then called Sewardville. It was named for the engineer James Buchanan Eads. A few landmarks from its earlier days remain, including the Wells School, built in the 1920s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Eads rewards a slower look. If you would like help thinking through a particular road, parcel or drive, or you just want to talk through how Eads compares with Collierville, Arlington or Fayette County, reach out any time. I am happy to help, with no obligation at all.
