Moving to East Memphis: A Relocation Guide for 2026

East Memphis Kelly Day October 22, 2026

If a job offer, a transfer, or a set of orders is bringing you to Memphis, there's a good chance someone has already told you to "look in East Memphis." That's sound advice, but it can be confusing from out of town, because East Memphis isn't a single subdivision or a line on a map. It's a broad part of the city with its own rhythm, its own landmarks, and a few practical details worth knowing before the moving truck arrives. This guide is the conversation I'd want to have with you before you start touring homes.

Where East Memphis Begins and Ends

Locals use the name loosely. Generally, East Memphis stretches east from around Highland Street, where Midtown and the University of Memphis area give way, out toward the Germantown city limits. Sam Cooper Boulevard is often treated as the northern edge and I-240 as the southern one, though plenty of people stretch the definition beyond the I-240 loop toward Germantown and Cordova. The zip codes you'll see most often are 38117, 38111, 38119, and 38120, so if a listing carries one of those, you're likely in the right area.

Poplar Avenue is the spine of it all. Running east and west through the heart of East Memphis, Poplar carries a steady mix of offices, shopping, restaurants, and churches, and you'll likely use it almost every day. Clark Tower and the Hilton Memphis near Poplar and Ridgeway make easy reference points when someone gives you directions.

Getting Around: The Roads You'll Learn First

Beyond Poplar, a handful of roads will become second nature within your first few weeks. I-240 loops around the area and connects you to I-40, the airport side of town, and the rest of the metro. Walnut Grove Road runs east toward Shelby Farms and Cordova. Perkins Road, Mendenhall Road, White Station Road, Ridgeway Road, and Kirby Parkway run north and south, linking Poplar to Park Avenue, Quince Road, and points beyond. A helpful tip is to drive your likely commute during rush hour before you commit to a home. A route that takes ten minutes on a Sunday can feel very different at 7:45 on a weekday morning, especially near the Poplar and I-240 interchange.

For everyday errands, Laurelwood sits on Poplar between Grove Park Road and Perkins Extended, and Poplar Plaza anchors the corner of Poplar and Highland. Oak Court Mall, at 4465 Poplar, is in the middle of a transition. Its owners announced plans to clear much of the property for a phased, mixed-use redevelopment, with work on the former Macy's area underway in early 2026 while some stores remained open. If you remember Oak Court from an earlier visit, expect it to look different, and check local news for the latest before you plan a shopping trip.

For healthcare, East Memphis is home to two major hospitals. Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis is at 6019 Walnut Grove Road in 38120, and Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis is at 5959 Park Avenue in 38119. Many specialty practices and outpatient offices cluster around both campuses, which is handy when you're setting up new doctors.

Utilities, Taxes, and Schools

Inside the City of Memphis, electricity, natural gas, and water usually come from one provider: Memphis Light, Gas and Water, known to everyone as MLGW. That's a nice simplification compared to juggling three companies. You can request service online through MLGW's residential site or by calling its customer care line, and I'd suggest doing it a week or two before your move date. Ask about any deposit or identification requirements when you call, since those details can vary.

Homes in East Memphis are generally within the City of Memphis, which means two property tax bills: one from the City of Memphis, collected by the City Treasury, and one from Shelby County, collected by the Shelby County Trustee. Both are based on values set by the Shelby County Assessor. The City has noted that its bills become delinquent after August 31, and the Trustee's office can confirm county due dates. If you're buying, your closing paperwork will show how taxes were prorated, and your lender will tell you whether they're escrowed.

Public schools in this area are part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. School zones follow specific addresses rather than zip codes, and two homes on nearby streets can be zoned differently, so please confirm assignments for any address directly with the district before you make a decision. The district also offers optional and choice programs with their own application timelines, which are worth looking into early.

Commuting to NSA Mid-South in Millington

If you're reporting to Naval Support Activity Mid-South, you'll be heading to Millington, north of Memphis off Navy Road. From East Memphis, most drivers take I-240 north toward the I-40 loop, then follow the north side of the beltway to Covington Pike, which becomes Singleton Parkway and leads toward the base. Paul Barrett Parkway (State Route 385) is another common approach. The installation's own Getting Here page lists gates and hours, and it's the best place to confirm which gate fits your schedule. Test-drive the route at your actual reporting time so you know what to expect.

Settling In During Your First Month

A few state and county tasks come up right away. Tennessee asks new residents to get a Tennessee driver license within 30 days of establishing residency. The Department of Safety lets you pre-approve documents online, and you'll need originals plus two proofs of Tennessee residency, so that first MLGW bill is useful for more than keeping the lights on. Vehicle registration and titling go through the Shelby County Clerk; bring your prior registration and your lienholder's information if you have a loan. You can register to vote with the Shelby County Election Commission once your address is settled.

After that, drive Poplar end to end on a weekend. East Memphis feels familiar quickly once you know a few landmarks.

If you're planning a move and would like help sorting out which part of East Memphis fits your commute and your routine, I'm always glad to talk it through, even if you're still months away. No pressure, just a local resource when you need one.
